It is with great sorrow that CNS and the UF IT Security Team say goodbye to Jordan Wiens, who accepted a position with a software company in Melbourne, Florida. His last day at UF was November 21, 2007.
Wiens' skills have protected the university from internet threats for nearly seven years. He has been a devoted team member and a cherished part of the UF IT security family.
Wiens was a tremendous knowledge asset for UF. During his tenure here, Wiens was involved in a number of campus projects, including being the primary architect behind the current UF campus intrusion detection system (IDS) that monitors the campus network for suspicious activity. He attended and presented at various security-related conferences, and wrote product reviews and feature articles in magazines such as Network Computing and InfoWorld. Along with fellow UF IT Security Team member John Sawyer, Wiens also was on the team that won the prestigious WarGamez competition at the DefCon conference two years in a row.
The going-away reception for Wiens was held on November 16 in the Friends of Music room in the University Auditorium. Dozens of well-wishers attended the reception to express their appreciation for Wiens' years of work in protecting the university's network from all manner of intruders.
His supervisor, Kathy Bergsma said, "Jordan's intensity, curiosity, and expertise will be missed," said Kathy Bergsma, UF IT Security Manager. "But we'll also miss him as a friend."
