There has recently been discussion on the Web-Managers-L list regarding notification needed when Google Analytics is used on a page at UF.
The Privacy Office and Web Administration have reviewed the issues involved from both privacy and web communication points of view.
To summarize the privacy issue: Each web page that includes Google Analytics must clearly notify the reader of that fact.
Please note that there has been some confusion about separate privacy policies and the use of notification "per site." Although the term "web site" is generally understood to be a collection of web pages, there is no consensus on which pages belong to which site. Since the reader of a web page may access a page based on a search and will not generally see any other particular page of a site (e. g. a home page), a site-based notification does not meet the privacy requirements.
Therefore, each page which includes Google Analytics must also include the following in the footer:
Code:
This page uses Google Analytics (Google Privacy Policy)
Going forward, anyone adding Google Analytics code to a web page should at the same time also add user notification in the footer. Previously modified pages will need a revision to include user notification.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this discussion.
