This is a course in general anthropology, also called four-field anthropology. The four fields are cultural anthropology, archeology, linguistics, and biological anthropology. On the schedule below are listed the general lecture topics, test dates, required readings from the course textbook, and links to lecture notes. The notes will generally be added after each class. The text for this course is Kottak's Anthropology, 11th edition.


Weeks 1 & 2 (Aug 24, 29, 31) - Introduction to four fields approach; major theories and history of anthropology.

Weeks 3 & 4 (Sept 5, 7, 12, 14) - Primates, early hominids, and modern humans.

Week 5 (Sept 19, 21) - Race, sex, and gender

Week 6 (Sept 26, 28) Review and exam 1

Week 7 (Oct 3, 5) - Cultural evolution: The Paleolithic, the Neolithic and the rise of states.

Week 8 (Oct 10, 12)- Language and culture.

Week 9 (Oct 17, 19) - Status, role and kinship

Weeks 10 (Oct 24, 26) - Review, Exam 2 Thursday

Weeks 11 & 12 (Oct 31 & Nov 2) - Economic and political systems

Weeks 13 (Nov 7 & 9) - Cognitive and psychological anthropology

Week 14 & 15 (Nov 14, 16, 21) - Expressive behavior: religion, art, music and sports

Week 16 (Nov 28, 30) - Culture change and applied anthropology

Week 17 (Dec 5) - Review for final exam
